Three Stages of Becoming an Authentic Leader

The leaders who come to me are rarely struggling to perform. They are struggling to recognise themselves in the performance.
They want more of themselves in their leadership—not less effort, but less pretence. They aren't lacking ambition or capability. They've simply been leading from someone else's playbook for so long that there's little room left for their own voice, values, and purpose.
Leadership has become automatic. On paper, things are going well, but something feels missing. They want to be bolder. They want their impact to feel genuinely theirs. They want to make decisions with greater clarity and confidence. And underneath it all, they want a career with room to grow, to thrive, and to last.
That journey has three stages, and each one builds on the last.
The Mirror
You can't lead others well until you see yourself honestly.
Using Gallup CliftonStrengths® and values-based coaching, we build a clear, unfiltered picture of how you actually show up as a leader—not how you think you do, or how you hope others see you.
Many leaders discover they've spent years trying to lead like the leaders around them rather than leading through their own strengths and values. Together, we explore your patterns, your default behaviours, your blind spots, and the strengths you may never have fully claimed.
This is where authentic leadership begins: with self-awareness.
The Shift
Awareness without action is just insight.
This is where insight becomes behaviour.
Together, we work within your real leadership context—your team, your organisation, and your challenges. Whether you're navigating difficult conversations, making tough decisions, leading through uncertainty, or building stronger relationships, we translate self-awareness into everyday leadership.
Lasting confidence doesn't come from collecting more leadership techniques. It comes from leading in alignment with who you are. As that alignment grows, authentic leadership becomes less about effort and more about intention.
The Ripple
Authentic leaders don't just perform better—they change the rooms they walk into.
As your leadership becomes more intentional, others experience it too. People begin speaking up sooner. Feedback becomes easier to give and receive. Teams spend less energy protecting themselves and more energy solving problems together.
This is the ripple effect of authentic leadership. Trust grows. Psychological safety strengthens. Belonging becomes part of the culture. And when people feel safe to contribute, challenge ideas, and learn from mistakes, high performance follows.
Why this sequence matters
I built this approach over years of coaching leaders, facilitating leadership development, and working alongside organisations across the Nordic region—from emerging managers to senior executives.
Again and again, I noticed the same pattern: leadership growth that lasts doesn't begin with techniques or tools. It begins with knowing yourself.
That's why the sequence matters.
The journey continues
This framework is the foundation of everything I do: one-to-one executive coaching, the Becoming an Authentic Leader programme, and leadership masterclasses.
Authentic leadership isn't about becoming someone else. It's about becoming more intentional, more self-aware, and more consistent in how you lead—so that others experience trust, clarity, and confidence through you.
Leadership isn't something we achieve once. It's something we practise every day, one conversation, one decision, and one relationship at a time.
If the Mirror, the Shift, or the Ripple resonates with where you are today, I'd be delighted to talk. Whether that's the September cohort, 1:1 coaching, or another way of working together, you can reach me at authenticleaders@outlook.dk.
This is the foundation of Becoming an Authentic Leader. The programme is built on a simple belief: authentic leadership requires both self-awareness and an honest understanding of impact. It is a cohort programme for up to twelve leaders, with me and a group of inspiring leaders by your side throughout. We work in a circle format across four residential and hybrid days at Bautahøj, five masterclasses with guest speakers, a Gallup CliftonStrengths Assessment and feedback session, and four individual coaching sessions.
The September 2026 cohort runs from September 2026 to March 2027. Early bird pricing is available until 1 July 2026: 24,575 kr. excl. VAT + 5,000 kr. expenses — a saving of over 5,000 kr. on the standard price.
And if you know someone who would benefit or be interested, please do pass this on — I'd be just as happy to have a clarity call with them.
Twelve places. Early bird closes 1 July 2026. If this is your moment, let's talk: authenticleaders@outlook.dk.
Warmest,
Charlotte Søndergaard❤️
