What Kind of Sunshine Are You Bringing Into the World?

Happiness is contagious. But so is sunshine.
We talk a lot about finding happiness. About noticing the small moments, recharging our batteries, and allowing ourselves to slow down.
In my last post, we explored how happiness lives in the small moments — the spring sunshine, a meaningful conversation, walking barefoot in the grass and feeling truly connected. We asked ourselves: "What brings me happiness right now?"
Today I want to explore the other side of that question. Because there is another dimension of happiness that we sometimes forget.
The happiness we create in others.
The Ripple Effect of Presence
Think about the people in your life who have made a difference. Not necessarily the loudest or most powerful ones. Often, it is the person who noticed you when you felt invisible. The colleague who said "great job" and actually meant it. The leader who made time when they didn't have to.
Small gestures. Genuine presence. Real warmth.
These moments stay with us far longer than we realise — and they cost the person who gave them almost nothing.
This is what it means to be the sunshine for others.
Authentic Presence is Contagious
Research in positive psychology shows that emotions are contagious. When we walk into a room with genuine warmth, curiosity, and openness, others feel it. It shifts the energy. It creates safety. It gives people permission to show up more fully themselves.
Neuroscience helps explain why. Our brains are wired with mirror neurons — meaning we literally reflect the emotional states of the people around us. When a leader walks in with genuine warmth and calm, the nervous systems of the people in the room respond in kind. And acts of kindness trigger oxytocin — the trust hormone — in both the giver and the receiver. Sunshine, it turns out, is not just a metaphor. It is biology.
As leaders, this is one of the most powerful tools we have — and it has nothing to do with authority or titles.
It has everything to do with authenticity.
When we lead from a place of self-awareness and genuine care for others, we become a source of energy rather than a drain on it. People around us feel seen, valued, and inspired to bring their best.
That is sunshine in leadership.
It Starts With How You Show Up
Being the sunshine for others doesn't mean being endlessly positive or pretending everything is fine. It means being present. Intentional. Curious about the people around you.
It looks like this:
Being curious about how others are doing — "How are you really doing?" — and genuinely listening
Noticing when someone is struggling and making space for that
Celebrating others' contributions, even in small ways
Bringing calm and warmth into difficult conversations
Choosing kindness when you could choose indifference
None of these require a leadership title. They require awareness and intention.
The Beautiful Paradox of Giving
Here is something wonderful: when we become a source of warmth and positivity for others, we don't deplete ourselves. More often than not, it gives us energy too.
Kindness is one of the few things that grows when you give it away.
When we invest in the happiness and well-being of the people around us — our colleagues, our teams, our families, our communities — we create environments where everyone, including ourselves, can thrive.
A Reflection for Today
Take a moment and ask yourself:
Who in my life could use a little sunshine right now?
How do I show up for the people around me — do I energise or drain?
What is one small thing I could do today to make someone feel seen and valued?
Leadership — and life — is not just about our own happiness. It is about the ripple effect we create in others.
And perhaps the most meaningful question is not just:
What brings me happiness?
but also:
What kind of sunshine am I bringing into the world?
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply show up — fully, warmly, and authentically.
Because you can be the sunshine for others too.
This is exactly what we explore in the Becoming an Authentic Leader programme at Authentic Leaders — how to lead with presence, authenticity, and genuine care for the people around you. You are welcome to reach out if you'd like to learn more.
