Happiness Is in the Air

International Day of Happiness – Isn’t It Amazing What a Little Sunshine Can Do?

For many of us, this winter has been a mix of contrasts. Moments of beauty and stillness, but also darker days when our energy felt low. The magical snow invited us to go outside and play, while the cold evenings encouraged us to enjoy the quiet pleasure of hygge.

But something shifts around March 20 –  the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

It is the day when light and darkness are perfectly balanced — twelve hours of each. Even if we don't consciously think about it, this moment often brings a quiet sense that winter is behind us, and spring is on its way.

Suddenly, small signs of life appear everywhere. Crocuses push through the soil. Daffodils and anemones bloom. Trees slowly prepare to turn green again, and the world itself seems to be awakening.

Children play outside. People begin to sit outside at cafés, enjoying coffee, talking, and laughing together. The air feels lighter, and our well-being batteries begin to recharge in the sun.

Happiness is in the air.

It is therefore no coincidence that every year on March 20, the world celebrates the International Day of Happiness.

Happiness as a Moment to Pause

The United Nations established the International Day of Happiness to recognize that happiness and well-being are fundamental human aspirations. But beyond global initiatives, this day offers something very simple — and very powerful.

It invites us to pause.

To check in with ourselves.

  • How am I really doing right now?

  • What brings me energy?

  • Where do I find joy in my everyday life?

In a world that moves quickly, especially here in 2026, where news, tasks and obligations are competing for our attention, happiness is rarely something we "achieve" once and for all. Instead, it is something we notice, nurture, and allow space for. Often, it lives in the small moments — a walk in the first spring sunshine, a meaningful conversation with a friend, the quiet satisfaction of doing something that truly matters.

And here is what makes this day particularly interesting for those of us in leadership roles: the same awareness that helps us notice happiness in our own lives is the very foundation of leading others well.

Happiness, Authenticity, and the Leader Within

In leadership — and in life — happiness is not about constant positivity. It is about alignment. When we allow ourselves to be authentic and create connections that invite others to be more aligned with their authentic selves.

Research shows that people thrive when they feel purpose, belonging, and psychological safety. Happiness, in this sense, is not just a personal feeling — it is a culture that leaders actively shape. When leaders make space for people to be seen, heard, and valued, well-being becomes something shared rather than something individual.

But this kind of leadership starts from within.

It begins with the courage to pause and ask:

  • Who am I as a leader?

  • What truly matters to me?

  • Am I leading in a way that feels aligned with my values?

When we lead from that place of self-awareness and authenticity, something powerful happens. People feel it — the energy, the presence, the sincerity. They feel safe to contribute, to share ideas, and to feel a sense of belonging. And in that environment, meaning, creativity, and happiness can truly grow.

Authentic leadership is not about being perfect. It is about being real, reflective, and intentional about our actions, connections and the culture we create.

Leading in Rhythm With Nature

Nature reminds us of something important: everything moves in cycles. Winter allows for rest and reflection. Spring invites renewal and fresh energy. And just like the seasons, both people and organizations need space to restore before they can grow again.

This is the heart of regenerative leadership — a way of leading that mirrors nature's cycles rather than fighting them. Instead of constantly pushing for more performance and productivity, regenerative leaders focus on creating conditions where people can recharge, reconnect with purpose, and grow sustainably over time.

When leaders support well-being and authentic connection, they don't just improve performance and create meaning in the short term. They cultivate organizations that can continuously renew themselves — resilient, human, and alive.

An Invitation Today

So today, on the International Day of Happiness, take a small moment for yourself. Step outside. Notice the light. Look for the first signs of spring. Walk barefoot in the grass and feel truly connected.

And ask yourself one simple question:

What brings me happiness right now?

Sometimes the answer is closer than we think — in the sunlight, in laughter, and in the quiet moments of connection.

A Few Questions to Sit With
  • What gives me energy right now?

  • What truly matters to me — as a leader and as a human being?

  • How can I create more space for well-being, connection, and authenticity in my life and leadership?

Sometimes the most powerful leadership step is simply to slow down, reflect, and realign with who you truly are. And perhaps that is exactly where happiness begins.

If these questions resonate with you, this is exactly the kind of reflection we explore in the Becoming an Authentic Leader programme at Authentic Leaders — creating space for self-awareness, alignment, and meaningful leadership. You are welcome to reach out if you'd like to learn more.
